In most cantons, insuring and protecting buildings and their inhabitants is the responsibility of independent cantonal building insurers. The 19 public-sector companies insure more than 2 million buildings in Switzerland with total insurance capital of more than CHF 2,000 billion. This corresponds to a share of around 80% of all existing buildings in the country.

Targeted investments in prevention and abatement of damage reduce the rate of damage and thus the costs. For this reason, the cantonal building insurers are actively involved the areas of damage prevention, damage abatement and claims settlement.
